The Awards for the Entire Career

Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Anghel Stanciu – the  President of the TUIASI Senate – opened the event mentioning that the awarding of the teachers holds a special meaning, as “seeing the role they played over the 200 years and how much they have given back, we have the opportunity to be inspired by them.

The first who receive the award for the entire career was Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Vitalie Belousov, former rector of TUIASI during 1990-1996, and the founder of the research and creation school in the splinting processing field, as well as the local and national school of inventic. He was the General Director of the National Institute of Inventic Iasi, President of the Inventic Committee of the Romanian Academic and Honorary President of the Society of Romanian Inventors. Present to the event, the professor said that “I am moved to be awarded again, but most of all I am moved to be awarded by my colleagues – although I hold many other awards – 70 medals at international and national exhibitions, inventions and cups granted by the Belgium ministers; you may all see them at the proper moment, exhibited in the new facility marking 47 years for the Machines, Gears and Tools Department where I have worked. I remember that when I was a young student, in 1949, we were concerned about how the Polytechnic will develop in the future and there was a very important objective to reach 5000 students. It seemed an enormous figure at that time. The things gain momentum and the number rose to  15 000 – bachelor, master and doctoral students and nothing is impossible anymore. And the Polytechnic is still growing.” At the conclusion of his speech, the professor heartily wished the University “ Vivat, crescat, urat!” Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Anghel Stanciu thanked him for “enabling us to turn back in time and to remember when we knocked at your door because you were a Dean, or a Rector, but most often because you were a teacher.”

“The Award for the Entire Career” dedicated to Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Hugo Rosman was handed to the professor Marcel Istrate, the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Energetics and Applied Informatics from TUIASI. He read the professor’s message who could not attend the event, but sent his “most distinguished wishes of prosperity for our University”, from the “88th year of life and 61st year of activity at the Polytechnic Institute Bulletin.” The professor Rosman spent his 46 years of didactic activity in the Romanian electrotechnical higher education system and he was a member of the publishing board of the Iasi Polytechnic Institute Bulletin since 1953, being an honorary publisher at the present.

The third awarded professor was Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Alfred Braier, who couldn’t either be present to the event. The prize was received by Ph.D. Prof. Liliana Bejan, the Director of the Theoretical Mechanics Department of the Faculty of Mechanics. She read the professor’s message, transmitting to those present that “I wish to ascertain my full commitment toward the Polytechnic School that taught me and offered me undeterred support in order to heartily serve the technical higher education of Iasi. On this special occasion I wish to address an eulogy to my teachers, especially to the outstanding professors Dumitru Mangeron and Alexandru Climescu, who were able to maintain a high academic standard in the mathematical seminary of our University. I owe everything to them and at the same time to our school environment and to our distinguished former and present students.” The professor Baier has been twice distinguished with the “Gheorghe Asachi” medal of TUIASI, in 1996 and 1998. Professor Baier is mentioned in the “History of Science in Romania: Mathematics, Mechanics, Astronomy”, Academy Publishing House, Bucharest, 1981.

The Award for Excellence in Research

In the second part of the event, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Carmen Teodosiu – Vice – Rector for Scientific Research at TUIASI – handed the “Awards for Excellence in Research” for three categories. “This award is nothing but a step, a step towards the final consecration. And we must mention that the position we are holding in the technical universities hierarchy – the second place after Bucharest – is also owed to our colleagues involved in the fundamental and applied research activity. They are those lifting us,” underlined Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Anghel Stanciu, the President of the Senate. In her turn, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Carmen Teodosiu stated that “These awards are, in fact, an acknowledgement of the reality that the scientific research in all its aspects, fundamental, applied research or innovation, is generating knowledge that contributes to the economical, cultural and social progress. Of course that in all the scientific research activities – from concept to the theoretical accurate substantiation, from the systemic approach of a problem to the experimental activity, project design and implementation – requires a lot of work and passion for research. And, naturally, the results represent every time a gain for the university and the involved researcher.

“The Award for Best Achievements in Scientific Research” for the activity evaluated during 2010 – 2012 was granted to Ph.D. Lecturer Eng. Gabriela Lisă  from the Chemical Engineering Department of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Protection, who published 169 scientific papers, out of which 107 in ISI rated magazines, four books in CNCS compliant publishing houses, 50 presentations and posters, being quoted 415 times (in ISI Web of Science Magazines). She participated to the implementation of 24 competition research grants, out of which 4 as project director. She thanked the university management and mentioned that “Although this is an individual award, behind it resides my collaboration, my availability to work with other colleagues from the research institutes of Iasi: you cannot say you’ve done everything by yourself. ” The researcher dedicated the award to her doctoral tutor, the academician Radu Zet Tudose, “who stirred in me the passion for the scientific research.

Ph.D. Lecturer Eng. Lenuța Kloetzer from the Organic and Alimentary Biochemical Engineering Department of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Protection received “The Young Researcher Award for Best Achievements in Scientific Research”. Up to the present moment, she published 15 articles in ISI and BDI publications, and 12 articles in volumes published for national and international scientific events. She also participated with papers and posters to 32 national and international conferences. “This is a very pleasant surprise and of course I wouldn’t have received this award if it had not been for the support of professor Dan Cascaval, my doctoral tutor, to whom I thank heartily. I also wish to offer my thanks to my department colleagues, who are making me feel like a family”, stated the young researcher.

The team of Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Marinel Temneanu, Ph.D. Lecturer Eng. Codrin Donciu, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Cristian Foșalău, Ph.D. Lecturer Eng. Cristian Zet from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Energetics and Applied Informatics, was granted “The Award for the Team Gathering the Most Research Funds”. The team raised research funds of almost 1.4 million RON during 2010 – 2012. As for the academic activity of the team’s members, as Director, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Marinel Temneanucoordinated nine scientific research projects. He is the author of opt books and academic manuals and over 80 scientific papers. He is a member in 46 research projects. He mentioned that “this prize crowns several years of work and I would like to thank, first and foremost, to my team colleagues and those who support and enable us to function. We would like to ensure you that all our efforts are spent in the name of the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Energetics and Applied Informatics.” Ph.D. Lecturer Eng.Codrin Donciucoordinated as project director nine research projects, out of which two ERA-NET projects. He is author / co-author to 7 books and over 100 scientific papers. As project director , Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Cristian Foșalău coordinated 12 research projects, published 10 didactic and scientific books, 44 ISI articles, 50 CNCS articles and 82 papers in volumes of international symposiums.  Ph.D. Lecturer Eng. Cristian Zetwas a project director or scientific manager in 5 research projects and was part of  25 scientific research contracts. He published 76 scientific articles, out of which 7 in ISI publications and 14 INSPEC indexed. He published three books and three manuals as author or ca-author and holds 3 invention patens, out of which the 1st is an international patent.

Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Anghel Stanciu underlined the importance of these funds, especially in the context of under financing the scientific research. He mentioned that without these grants the faculties are in danger of becoming bankrupt and that their role is not only to elevate the scientific prestige, but also the economic one. Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Carmen Teodosiu added “each year we make a research review of all aspects, of each category that counts both for the national and international visibility and each time we see that the results of research are measured also in money. The competition grants are based, after all, on the same hard working research groups that at the same time publish, tutor doctoral students and participate to national and international research programs.

The “Awards for Excellence in Research” were initiated in 2012, and the management of TUIASI wishes that they become a tradition for the University. “When we suggested these awards, in 2012, we intended to acknowledge the scientific achievements of our colleagues who, for several years, have been constantly working in order to develop research trends and research groups. Especially in the last years’ context, when the national funding of the research programs has constantly diminished, this endeavour of our institution – an institution of advanced research and education – is an important one. This year, for example, at the «The Award for Innovation and technological Transfer» we had no nominee,” further mentioned the Scientific Research Vice-Rector of TUIASI.

The Awarding Committee was formed by members of the Administration Board and Senate, among whom, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Carmen Teodosiu, Scientific Research Vice-Rector, as President, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Carmen Loghin, the Dean of the Faculty of Textile-Leather and Industrial Management, Ph.D. Prof. Eng.  Mihai Budescu, the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Marcel Istrate, the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Energetics and Applied Informatics, Ph.D. Prof. Eng. Iulian Ciocoiu, the President of the Senate Research Committee, Ph.D. Lecturer.
